Most of the time I am confronted by daily issues and different personalities thereof. It always takes me back to the stories I have grown to believe and built my faith upon hearing them. Before Christ that is BC, people were known by their names. It grew from a name to be called by their tribes and nations thereafter. People from these times had no sense of changing this into surnames and so on. They were either categorised by the trade or skill they had. And mostly by the man that fathered them. Now the naming of things and situations have taken a huge turn from the beginning of time till now. Significant Godly incident would occur then the place would posses that as its name. This was the foundation of customs of men and the values of tradition. I like what happened before in the garden of Eden. The bible say God paraded everything in front of Adam and he gave name to every single thing. From that time on all the fruits, vegies and birds and animals were named by Adam. He even named the woman.
Everywhere I go I get to learn the names of different people as they come in diverse ethnic groups and religion. Sometimes I hear a name and wonder why does it hurt so much to be called that? But then i get to understand the meaning or the idea of it then console myself that it is OK somehow. I would be lying if I say all names are nice, but that does not change the fact that they are names.
One thing though that a place you have grown as long as you can remember have to change its name because of political reasons. Somehow it does not sit well in my mind that politics have to change the face of history or the very same beliefs we had since the beggining of time, naming of place by whatever happened there, not by honoring so and so who did what somewhere not here, then he/she has to be called by all the streets and airport's and centers.
When you name your child, you are creating a sphere for your child,
based on a symbolic meaning that has a lot to do with character. There are names like e.g. "Matlakala" it is a Sotho name for rubish. Does it mean that this child is rubish or rubish happened when concieved or she is the resulf of it? Most kids in school nowadays they change their names that parents gave them and want the name of the superstars or role model. But that is another side of the story. Naming of a place is rather Holy than we think. If we can remeber well, God created heavens and earth and He named it so. He seperated these two. It goes on saying His spirit was hovering in the surface of the earth. He already had a map in his mind and the names of places he wanted to be named. When Moses asked him what should I call you. He said I am who I am. These days scientist have confirmed the study of this DNA particle that they found. It all comes together to the existance of God. I am who I am. That means I am everything and everything is me. So whe we name whatever we are naming we should consider how does it sit in Gods ear.
well said, couldn't have said it better myself.
